Wisconsin’s Democratic gubernatorial primary is one week out, and the staff chart on state Rep. Francesca Hong (HONGF)’s campaign just became the story. Former child actress Renee Olstead — also known as Renee Faust, and known to the adult-subscription internet as a high-profile creator — is serving as deputy campaign manager, The Heartland Post reported and Fox News amplified. Hong runs as a Democratic socialist. On PolitiCap, that is not gossip for its own sake. It is a politician ticker staff signal: who builds the machine that wants the governor’s office, and what the primary crowd is willing to underwrite with virtual stakes.
Olstead has worked as a paid campaign operative since at least January, per the outlet. Her X bio reads “HONG 4 GOV” and points to Hong’s get-out-the-vote page. She has posted from campaign events and, according to The Heartland Post, coordinated logistics for high-profile surrogates — including streamer and commentator Hasan Piker. Fox News Digital asked the campaign to confirm title, start date, pay status, and qualifications. The campaign answered with a statement that did not walk through each question line by line.
The campaign’s defense — and the citation on the wall
“Renee Faust is a licensed mental health clinician who has spent her career providing care to trafficking survivors,” the campaign said. “Since joining the campaign in December, she has helped build the largest grassroots campaign in Wisconsin history. The right-wing politicians attacking her are the same ones who want government dictating women’s health care decisions.” That is the spin frame: clinician, survivors, grassroots scale, culture-war counterpunch.
The paper trail is thicker. Olstead previously founded the Coalition for American Sex Workers (CASW — LOCAL 304), which pushes decriminalization and related policy. Last year, Hong and three other state representatives presented Olstead with an official Wisconsin State Assembly citation recognizing her advocacy — and her selection as “Penthouse Pet of the Year” in 2024. Fox asked Hong to explain that citation choice. The campaign did not directly answer. Hong has also pursued legislation to decriminalize adult prostitution and establish a sex workers’ bill of rights. Voters can read that as consistency or as a brand. The civic market will price the primary either way.
Primary field and the Thanksgiving delete
Hong’s Democratic rivals include Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley (CROWLD), former Wisconsin Department of Administration Secretary Joel Brennan, and state Sen. Kelda Roys (ROYSK). That is a serious bench for a purple-state open seat — not a vanity heat check. Wisconsin Family Action president Daniel Degner called the deputy hire “unbelievable” and said voters deserve to know whether a Hong administration would elevate the same figure into government leadership. Campaigns hate that question. Primaries exist to force it.
Hong has also had to walk back progressive maximalism. She has voiced support online for ideas including abolishing the U.S. Senate and defunding the police, then distanced herself in pre-primary interviews as she talks up public safety. A deleted 2020 post urged canceling Thanksgiving as colonialism theater; she told Politico Thanksgiving is now her “favorite holiday” and she does not want it canceled. That is the classic primary remix: old posts, new tone, same name on the ballot. When national socialist brand names like Sen. Bernie Sanders (SANDEB) get asked about endorsements, the mockery cycle writes itself — and the local staff story still sits underneath.
