APB day one: minority cabinet-Jetten faces the floor — WILDERS, KLAVERJ, BONTEH price the tape

THE HAGUE — Day one of the Algemene Politieke Beschouwingen turned the Prinsjesdag package into a minority-math stress test. Fractievoorzitters spent hours pricing what a cabinet of D66, VVD and CDA can still buy from the opposition — and what it cannot.

Minister-President Rob Jetten (D66) sat in Vak K while the first term ran. Day two is his reply and the motie strip. Day one was the order book: who opens, who snipes, who holds for a better fill.

Hard right volume, soft coalition edges

Geert Wilders (PVV) came in hot. He already flagged a likely motie van wantrouwen. On the floor he went full PVV catalogue: asielstop, “massadeportaties,” Islam talking points — without the restraint he sometimes showed in the Schoof years. He also turned on JA21’s Joost Eerdmans: take support per begroting, he warned, and “u gaat gepiepeld worden” — asylum crumbs now, a stikstof deal with PRO later.

Eerdmans answered that an all-in confidence deal already looks “passé.” JA21 will fight for big themes but will not become a silent gedoogpartner. His price list is sharp: scrap the Spreidingswet, criminalise illegal stay, reassess Syrians on temporary permits — and he still signals no on the Klimaat en Groene Groei begroting unless a lot moves his way. D66’s Paternotte pushed back: municipalities actually work with the Spreidingswet; dumping it is a heavy demand.

VVD floor lead Ruben Brekelmans kept the door cold toward PRO. “Sitting at the table and reading out your own election programme is not negotiating,” he jabbed at Jesse Klaver. He would prefer one wide budget deal, but he will not rule out voting per begroting if partners refuse to talk without getting their way first. That is the “doormodderen” scenario Klaver hates — and Brekelmans still leaves it on the table.

Centre and left conditions

Henri Bontenbal (CDA) refused that drift. He is “not for the doormodderen scenario.” A minority cabinet, he said, needs real jointness with the opposition and the polder — not ministers speaking only for their own smaldeel. On stikstof he held the line against BBB and Keijzer pressure: the crisis still has to be solved, not campaign-scored.

Klaver (PRO) opened the day with a call for “adem van grootsheid” — rebuild-scale ambition on climate and infrastructure instead of delay until it is too late. He will not back social-security cuts and keeps pressing whether the coalition wants one package deal or a month-long bazaar of single-budget trades. CU’s Bikker stayed constructive: she sees housing and hospice openings and quoted the king’s line against shrinking democracy to “half plus one.” PvdD’s Teunissen said she misses the old “klimaatdrammer Jetten” and handed the premier a climate wishlist.
